Day of Ashura

Ashura on the 10th day of Muharram is a significant Islamic observance. For Shia Muslims it is a day of mourning for the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali at Karbala in 680 CE, marked by processions and remembrance; many Sunni Muslims observe it with voluntary fasting. It is a public holiday in several Muslim-majority countries, and its Gregorian date moves about 11 days earlier each year.
